Braun Silk Epil 3170 Epilator Review
The Braun Silk-Epil 3170 Epilator is a cheap way to get the same hairless results of a more expensive epilator.
While it doesn’t have many frills and can take a little more time to get the job done with its 20 tweezers, features like the Smartlight and SoftLift Tips help to make sure you catch and remove every unwanted hair on your body.
- 2 speeds;
- Built-in light;
- SoftLift Tips technology;
- Continuous use with no loss in power.
- Requires more than one pass for removing all the hairs;
- No Pivoting Head;
- Must always be plugged in;
- Not waterproof, they can’t be both used and cleaned under running water;
- Dry use only;
- Hard to get hair around curves;
The Braun Silk-Epil 3170 is one of the most basic epilator models offered by Braun, but it’s an excellent choice if you don’t want to spend a lot of money to get hairless skin for weeks on end.
It has a massaging head attachment but no other extras like trimmer caps or facial caps. It’s also a dry epilator, so you can’t take it into the shower or tub.
What’s in the box?
What will you receive when you buy a Braun Silk-Epil 3170?
When you open the box, you’ll find the epilator body, the tweezing head, a cap with massage rollers, a brush for cleaning the epilator and a power adapter for plugging the epilator into the wall.
The Braun Silk Epil 3 is a well built epilator with a perfect contour that fits perfectly in your hand.
The Braun Silk-Epil 3170 comes with a power cord, so you’ll need to have it plugged in during use.
We don’t think that’s a bad thing because many rechargeable models get weak as the charge runs out.
Since this epilator is plugged in, you’ll always have a steady power source.
The cord is long enough to allow you to move where you need to go.
However, the Braun Silk-Epil 3170 is a dry epilator, meaning it can’t get wet and absolutely can’t be used in the bath or shower.
Tweezers and performance
Epilators work by tweezing hairs out by the root – super-fast. Different models of epilators have different numbers of tweezers, ranging from 20 to 72.
Like most other epilators in the lower price range, the Braun Silk-Epil 3170 has 20 tweezers.
What this means is that it’ll take a longer time to remove all of the hairs in one area than it would take if you had an epilator that had more tweezers.
Twenty hairs will get pulled out in the same amount of time it would take another model to yank out 72.
That said, many women appreciate an epilator with a smaller number of tweezers because it can be less painful.
That’s a good reason why this epilator can be a good entry-level device. Click to buy Braun Silk-épil 3170 on Amazon.
When you use the Braun Silk-Epil 3170, you should expect to have to pass the device over your skin a few times to give it a chance to grab all of the hairs.
It’s very effective at catching and removing hairs; it just takes a little time for it to get to them all.
Usually the first time you epilate an area you’re going to have the largest number of hairs to remove.
After the first time, your epilating sessions should go a lot faster.
This model has a fixed head instead of a pivoting head.
Some epilator models have a head that will pivot slightly to make it easier to follow your body contours when epilating. This model doesn’t do that.
The Braun Silk-Epil 3170 has two speed settings:
- Setting I: extra gentle
- Setting II: extra efficient
Setting I will turn the tweezer head more slowly and Setting II will turn it faster.
Braun recommends using Setting I if you’re brand new to epilation and if you’re removing hair from places that are especially sensitive to pain, such as the underarm and bikini areas.
Over time, when you get used to the sensation of epilating, you can move on to Setting II.
Body areas it can be used on
Braun lists this epilator as specially designed for use on the legs.
However, they provide instructions for using this model everywhere on the body, such as the underarms and bikini area.
Most epilators that are meant for the face come with a facial cap accessory. This epilator doesn’t.
Because of that, the Braun 3170 Silk-Epil isn’t the best choice for removing facial hair.
The Braun Silk Epil 3170 comes with a few accessories:
- 1Massaging rollers attachment. This attachment massages the skin during epilation in an attempt to cut down on discomfort. Even with a massage, having hair pulled out can hurt! But the massaging rollers don’t feel bad.
- 2Smartlight feature. This is a built-in light that helps you to see hairs more easily during the removal process. It’s a very useful feature that cuts down on the chance that you’ll miss hairs.
- 3SoftLift Tips. These little nubs help to lift up hairs during epilation, making them easier for the tweezers to grab and pull out. Anything that helps an epilator to catch hairs is a fantastic extra!
Whenever you’re pulling hair out from the root, either with tweezing, waxing or epilating, there’s going to be some pain.
The massaging rollers that come with the Braun Silk-Epil 3170 help to reduce it a little.
The slower speed offered by Setting I also helps. Many women find that epilators with 20 tweezers, like this model, hurt less than ones that pull out more hairs all at once.
Cleanup is the same as with just about every other dry epilator.
You should clean the epilator after every use. Unplug the epilator and remove the massaging rollers.
Clean the epilating tweezers thoroughly with the cleaning brush dipped in alcohol.
You can rotate the tweezing head manually to make sure you clean the entire thing.
It’s important to clean after use to prevent the growth of bacteria that could lead to inflammation of the skin.
Should you buy the Braun Silk-Epil 3170 Epilator? We think it’s a great choice for body hair removal, especially if you fall into one of these two categories:
- 1You’re new to epilating and don’t want to spend a lot of money on a device before you know if it’s something you’re going to stick with.
- 2You’re an experienced epilator but don’t need a lot of bells and whistles. Hair removal with lasting results is what you’re after, and that’s all you need your epilator to do.
This device isn’t meant for the face, you can’t take it in the shower or tub and it will take longer to get the job done than some other models.
However, it has design elements that address the main concerns of epilators: the massage rollers help to reduce the level of pain, and the Smartlight and SoftLift Tips help you to catch and remove every hair.
For a good epilator at a cheap price, we recommend the Braun Silk-Epil 3170.
